Saturday Stories #20 Fluffy and Furry
Rediscover a love for fiction, because stories can change the world
These fiction stories are unedited, unfiltered, and written in 15-25 minutes. Please be aware that they may contain intense material related to emotional healing, trauma recovery, and redirected fears. The today’s insights section contains information and learning from our personal journey with multiplicity/Dissociative Identities while healing from complex PSTD. We bring insights from our perspective as a therapist interrupted who is bringing together lived experience and clinical information.
Image Description: two rabbits in a spring field of grass
Once upon a time there were two bunnies, Fluffy and Furry. They belonged to a little girl named Rose. Every day Rose leashed the bunnies and took them on walks, well hops. One spring day, Rose wen to hop her bunnies and Fluffy was missing. She frantically searched all around and her bunny was nowhere to be found. She sat down on a fallen tree next to the rabbit cage and began to cry. At least Furry was still here. Furry hopped over to her. Furry nuzzled her tiny nose into Rose’s light pink dress.
“Oh, what are we going to do Furry?”
But Furry had no answers. So, Rose got up and began to search. She searched her front and back yards and the woods that surrounded her house. She continued her search until it was starting to get dark and her mom called her into dinner.
Rose put Furry back in the cage and ran through the yard and up the porch steps to her home.
“Oh, there you are,” her mother said. “We have to get you ready for Easter. Go take a bath.”
“But Mom, Fluffy is missing.”
“Oh, stop fussing about those bunnies. You spend way too much time with them. Now go take your bath so I can put curlers in your hair for church tomorrow.”
Rose did as she was told. She cried herself to sleep. The next day she got up and found a basket of candy by her bed. She ran and looked out the window and out of the corner of her eye she saw Fluffy hopping away with Easter baskets in his paws.
Image Description: Picture I took of a wooden box with the word “peace” carved in with colored plastic Easter eggs and clay creatures-an owl, a lady bug, a funny looking green critter and others sitting next to it. There’s some flowers in the foreground and a small item in the box that says have a blast also some Altoid mints and other indistinguishable items. This is my idea of an untraditional Easter Basket.
Today’s Insights
The rabbit is an animal that is sometimes associated with rebirth. I think of rebirth as a form of transformation and the rabbit or bunny in this story goes from living in a cage to not only finding freedom, but also his purpose. Many of us are on the journey of finding where we belong and what can bring joy and meaning. This isn’t to say that Furry had less of a purpose. Perhaps Furry was given the same opportunity as Fluffy, but she chose to stay and take care of Rose. This isn’t a lesser purpose, but a different one.
Someone who teaches children or is a stay-at-home parent can make a huge difference in the world. To take care of children and keep things running in the background is a huge responsibility. A lot of times we don’t honor or value the people who are not out front or in glamorous positions. I think about when I’ve worked jobs where there were office staff and when they were sick or out it seemed that things always came to a stop and we really saw how valuable they were.
This Sunday is Easter and this is a holiday that can be difficult for many trauma survivors, especially those who’ve endured extreme suffering that can come up in the form of traumaversaires (dates on which a trauma happened). If you’ve been through hard things, I hope you can find some ways to be gentle with yourself or selves. Check-in about what your needing and if there’s something small you can do that can bring peace or joy.
